Setting up OpenPGP Keys on Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble)


  1. First install seahorse:
        sudo apt install seahorse    


  2. Launch the application by searching for the following name in the Apps launcher:
    Passwords and Keys


  3. Click on: GnuPG keys


  4. Then click on: Add new items


  5. Then, from the pop-up list, select: GPG key


  6. A dialog window pops-up with the title: New PGP key

    Enter the following details:
    Full Name
    Email Address
    Comment (a short description of your key's purpose, e.g. UbuntuOne Launchpad)
    Encryption Type: RSA (as per current standards)
    Key Strength (bits): 4096 (as per current standards)
    Expiration Date: (preferably, Never Expires)

    Click on: Create


  7. A prompt pops-up with the title: Allow inhibiting shortcuts

    Click on:
    Allow


  8. A dialog window pops-up with the title: Passphrase for New PGP Key

    Enter your password and confirm password in the two text boxes.

    Click on: OK


  9. A dialog window pops-up with the title: Generating PGP key

    Wait for a moment...


  10. A Personal PGP key will have now been generated and displayed along with your full name, your email address, and your comment.

    Double-click on it.

    A dialog window pops-up with the title:
    YOUR_FULL_NAME - Private key
    It contains your key details like: Key ID and Fingerprint

    Now go back until you reach the very start, titled: Passwords and Keys


  11. Click on the three-dash (three-bar / hamburger) icon.


  12. Click on Sync and publish keys...


  13. A dialog window pops-up with the title: Sync keys

    Click on: Key Servers


  14. A dialog window pops-up with the title: Preferences

    Refer to the field: Publish keys to:

    Select (this or similar): hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com:11371

    Close the dialog box.


  15. Click on: Sync


  16. A dialog window pops-up with the title: Synchronizing keys...

    Wait for a moment...



Note that, if the
tracker-miner service is currently running, then the seahorse (Passwords and Keys) application might crash.
